UH soccer team earns road sweep of Pac-12 teams

The Hawaii soccer team earned an unprecedented road sweep of Pac-12 teams with a 1-0 win over Oregon State at Corvallis, Ore., Sunday.

UH (2-2) got on the board in the 24th minute on a 6-yard finish by Tiana Fujimoto from a lob served up by Krystal Pascua and flicked her way by Alexis Colacchio. The Rainbow Wahine held on tight the rest of the period and for the entire second half, despite being a player down for the last 13 minutes.

The Wahine earned consecutive road wins for the first time since 2008, and had never before beaten Pac-12 opponents back-to-back, home or away. UH topped Oregon 1-0 in Eugene, Ore., on Friday.

UH exceeded last season's road win total despite some anxious moments down the stretch.

"They've overcome. I'm just so proud of them," UH coach Michele Nagamine said in a postgame phone interview. "It's absolutely phenomenal to do that quick turn after a game like Oregon. ... For us to put together two good games in a row, that was my challenge to the team on Friday. To actually have them do it is mind-boggling for me. It blew my mind."

Wahine midfielder Hayden Gibson was issued her second yellow card -- equaling a red and an ejection -- with 13 minutes to play, leaving UH to play 10-vs.-11.

OSU (1-4-1) got a deep shot off UH's crossbar with six minutes to play, but that was the Beavers' best look late.

Fujimoto's first goal of the season was the 12th of her career, moving her into a 10th-place tie on the UH career list with Nicki Arakawa.

UH continues play at home on Friday and Sunday in the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Soccer Classic against Idaho State and Portland State.

A terrific game by the Rainbow Wahine. They played with tremendous grit and poise despite being one player short for the last 13 minutes of the game - a great reflection of the coaching staff.
