A 31-year-old Maui man remains hospitalized on Oahu after the Ford sedan he was driving crashed early Sunday morning in Kapaa, Kauai County officials said.
The accident occurred around 2 a.m. when the man's vehicle struck a coconut tree along Aleka Loop and the car flipped onto its passenger side, pinning the man inside, officials said.
Two passengers in the vehicle at the time of the collision, ages 50 and 51, were not injured, officials said. No other vehicles were involved.
Firefighters reportedly cut through the car's roof with a saw to extricate the driver. Officials said the man was initially taken to Wilcox Hospital in Lihue. He was later moved to Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu.
A police investigation of the accident is still under way .
