Mid-Pacific Institute has named Fabulous Five member Dwight Holiday as its boys head basketball coach, the school announced today.

Holiday was a starting guard on the iconic University of Hawaii basketball team that captivated the attention of Hawaii in the early 1970s. Dubbed the Fabulous Five, the starting members -- Bob Nash, Jerome Freeman, Al Davis and John Penebacker -- had a 24-3 record in the 1971-72 and played in the NCAA tournament. The year before, the group led UH to the NIT.

Holiday has coached multiple teams in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu in both basketball and tennis, though he stepped away from coaching for some time.

He has been active in the game in a less public role, helping to run basketball camps with some of his contacts from the NBA. Most recently he has been active in helping his two nephews (Jrue and Justin Holiday), both of whom play in the NBA.

Wow.....Dwight Holiday that's a name I have not heard in YEARS! Unbelievable. Great to have him back for the locals, he was indeed a great contributor towards the Fabulous Five! I wonder if anyone knows what happened to Gary Gray? Last I heard he was in Portland where his father was.

This is not fair cause MidPac will be using NBA moves.Nash never learned how to coach and he was at UH 30years. Holiday will be best at helping his players budget their lunch money and allowances to save for retirement.Someone is drinking Kool-Aid.

What a great player and person to have on the basketball team, Mid Pac should be so lucky and proud to have someone of his stature as a head coach. Good things should happen.
