Pensacola and Kinau reopened following gas line repairs

By Star-Advertiser staff

LAST UPDATED: 04:09 a.m. HST, Sep 28, 2013

Hawaii Gas personnel completed repairs to a gas leak on Pensacola Avenue Friday evening.

All lanes of Pensacola and Kinau streets were reopened just before 4 a.m. this morning.

Police had closed Pensacola Avenue between Kinau Street and Beretania Street except for one lane for local traffic and the bus.

The leak was first detected by a Honolulu police officer about 4 a.m. Friday.

A Hawaii Gas spokesman said the leak was traced to a broken 4-inch pipe. Repair crews secured backup gas service to area businesses before shutting off the line for replacement.

Grateful for that alert police officer! Gas line leaks are so dangerous, and there's an elementary school at that corner! I'm sure it messed up our already messed-up Friday traffic, but it could have been so much worse.
