Las Vegas gambler charged with cheating California casino

SAN DIEGO >> A gambler who once won tens of millions of dollars has been charged with marking cards to win a few grand at a San Diego County casino.

Authorities said Friday that Archie Karas was arrested at his Las Vegas home on Tuesday. He remains jailed pending extradition to California.

County prosecutors charged him last week. They claim Karas won $8,000 with marked blackjack cards at the Barona Casino in July.

He faces up to three years in prison if convicted.

The Nevada Gaming Control Board says Karas also was arrested four times in that state on suspicion of cheating.

Karas is known for his high-stakes gambling. Between 1992 and 1995, he turned $50 into $40 million at the Vegas tables but he later gambled it away.
