A 26-year-old Kailua-Kona man was killed Sunday when a car ran over him while he lay in the road, police said.

Police arrested the driver of the car, a 39 year-old Kealakekua man, on suspicion of negligent homicide and operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol.

He was released pending further investigation.

An autopsy will be done to determine how Richard Penrose was killed.

Hawaii County police said the incident occurred at  2:53 a.m. on Highway 11 near the junction with Puuloa Road in Kailua-Kona.

The victim was lying in the southbound lane when the he was run over by a 2004 Mercedes-Benz driven by the suspect, police said.

This is the Big Island's 23rd fatality this year compared with 30 at this time last year.

Police ask that anyone who witnessed the incident, call officer Thomas Koyanagi at 326-4646, extension 229.

I've been seeing this more and more, so I have to ask. Is anyone really calling it "Hawaii island" as opposed to "the Big Island"? I note the article uses one in the headline and the other in the text. Am I so out of touch now?

Don't worry, happens all the time. They can't even spell Kealakekua right in the second paragraph. Wait for "update."

The syntax is horrible, but the reporter was trying to indicate that the event happened on Sunday.

In the mad rush to get out 'news' - the SA staff provides comedy in lieu of accuracy. You're the only newspaper in town - what's the big rush? You're competing with yourselves - and you're losing. smh ._.

First and foremost why was the guy laying on the road? It's night time and hard to see so why was the driver arrested?

It's said negligent homicide too. According to the article he was killed by the driver but I wonder if the man was already dead when he was laying on the road. Hope the autopsy shows otherwise.
