The Hawaii women's volleyball team, riding a 13-match winning streak, moved up a spot to No. 5 in the AVCA Coaches Top 25 Division I poll announced today.

The Rainbow Wahine (15-1) received four first-place votes, one more than last week's poll.

The top five teams all moved up one place, beginning with new No. 1 USC (14-1, 47 votes). Behind the Women of Troy are Florida (15-1, 6 votes), Texas (10-2, 2 votes), Penn State (12-2) and Hawaii.

Last week's No. 1 Washington (11-1) fell to No. 6 after being upset by unranked Colorado in Bolder, Colo., the Huskies' first loss of the year. Michigan State (15-1, 1 vote) jumped two spots to No. 7 followed by Stanford (10-3), Nebraska (11-2) and North Carolina (15-0).

The Wahine (4-0 Big West) host UC Santa Barbara Friday and Cal Poly Saturday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Hopefully, at the end of the season they'll end up at No. 1. That's the one that really counts. Go WAHINE...

Maybe it was fortunate that The Wahine lost to San Diego, because we would be number one now, with all the pressure that Washington faced. The NCAA tournament is a long and winding road, with many twists and turns. The 2009 Final Four team nearly defeated Penn State, and had we won versus The Lady Nittany Lions, we may have had a chance at the National Title. So pray pray pray ...... Let's Go 'Bows!! Let's Go 'Bows!! Let's Go 'Bows!!

This year number five Hawaii defeated number three Texas and number 23 UCLA, while losing to number 12 San Diego, with the rankings from this week's poll. As Coach Shoji had noted, it would have been better if San Diego and UCLA were ranked higher, however, que sera sera.

The NCAA's preference to use their RPI system for seeding all 64 teams in their NCAA tournament is mostly to benefit teams 17 to 64. Would it not make sense that at least the NCAA would include the rankings of this AVCA poll as part of their methodology of seeding teams? With all the misgivings of the power and jurisdiction of the NCAA, including their wrist slap of Johnny Manziel, the NCAA needs to reconsider their RPI seeding of their NCAA Volleyball tournaments. If for example Hawaii is seeded 18 this year after ending up with a rank of say 6 in the AVCA poll prior to selection Sunday, then "something is wrong", shall we say?

Team chemistry is always better to have than a malcontent to poison the well. It seems that this team continues to build this chemistry as the newcomers meld with the old timers.

Fair placement. Wahine must continue their winning ways to hold on till final pretourney poll when shenanigans 'appear' and regionals dished out. Imua! Go Wahine! You're looking tight together and talented so just keep it up.

awesome gamble by coach to play Texas first game of season. although I think it was because Tai was going to sit out that game if it was on sunday. I think it is so sad that Hawaii is forced to win out to host. Hawaii is deserving to host the first two rounds, I sure hope the media goes ballistic if we don't host. we need to be heard, in fact I've always felt we should try and get our pre tournaments televised nationally so that people can see what they are missing by not letting us host. the opposing teams are gonna say too bad we didn't host but I bet they are happy they don't have to play here during tournament time. Let's go bows! Emily for player of the year!!!!
