Musician's girlfriend says he tried to strangle, stab her

The girlfriend of a 26-year-old local musician told police he tried to strangle her twice before he tried to stab her in the neck and stomach, but his knife hit her knee instead at their Kahaluu home last week, according to a police affidavit.

Kaipo Kapua, who has a history of assault, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and kidnapping Friday. Prosecutors later charged him with second-degree assault, two counts of terroristic threatening and abuse. He is in custody unable to post $50,000 bond.

According to a police statement, Sara Wilson, who said she has been living with Kapua for the past two years, said they were arguing in the bedroom of their home at 9 a.m. Thursday when he allegedly tried to strangle her and she "blacked out."

Later when the confrontation moved to the bathroom, Kapua allegedly tried to strangle her again while threatening to kill her with a kitchen knife.

Kapua allegedly told Wilson, 23, that she would not leave their Mapele Road home alive.

Wilson told police that Kapua swung the knife and attempted to stab her in the throat. When Wilson deflected the knife Kapua then allegedly tried to stab her in the stomach, but struck her right knee instead.

Although Kapua did not allow Wilson to call 911 for an ambulance, he did take her to Castle Memorial Medical Center to be treated. However, Wilson, fearing what Kapua might do, said she told emergency room doctors that her injury was caused by a fall.

The couple, who have a child together, returned to their home where Wilson said she fell asleep after taking medicine prescribed by hospital doctors.

Wilson said she tried to flee after she woke up at 11:30 p.m. Thursday, but Kapua again threatened her with a knife while she stood in front of her car as she tried to leave. After Wilson escaped and reported the incident to Kaneohe police Kapua was arrested at their home at 1:54 a.m. Friday.

Kapua pleaded no contest to a third-degree assault charge in 2010. He was ordered to pay a $150 fine and $2,026 in restitution, according to court records.

In April police issued a CrimeStoppers bulletin for Kapua, who had disappeared for a day. Friends reported his disappearance after he had an argument with his live-in girlfriend and hadn't been seen for nearly 24 hours, according to media reports.

At this point everyone knows this guy is eventually going to kill her and possibly others. This woman will never feel safe as long as he is free, so lock him up and throw away the key. I bet his dad was a real winner too, lock his dad up with him.

Allie, have you heard his music? I have not and don't plan on it, but I would really have to actually LISTEN before I come up with a critique.

battered wife syndrome. I bet she'll be going back to him if he's left off the hook somehow. Garrans! I feel these victims don't have the mind strength or self confidence to leave or they are in denial that the batterer really "loves" them to kill them. It's a sickness going back to the batterer time and time again

Allie, you should really consider putting your comments into an objective point of view and not relate or sterotype people based on ethnic, race, sex, age, or whatever to address problems. I am sure this type of thing happens all over the world, not just here, locally.

local is a geographical term meaning he is from here. It is not, for me, a racial or ethnic or gender term.
