UH's Shawna-Lei Kuehu drove to the hoop against Cal State Fullerton on March 9 at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Hawaii women’s basketball team was picked to finish second behind Cal Poly in the Big West Conference preseason media poll released today.

Cal Poly, the defending BWC tournament champion, received 17 of 20 first-place votes, with the other three going to UH.

Rainbow Wahine senior forward Kamilah Jackson was named to the six-player preseason all-conference team.

UH went 17-14 overall last season and 13-5 in the Big West, tied for second place, in Laura Beeman’s first year as coach. It was the first time in a decade the Rainbow Wahine were invited to the WNIT.

The Wahine open the regular season Nov. 9 at Arizona State, but first play a home exhibition on Oct. 30 vs. Hawaii Hilo.

After Hawaii, the poll went Cal State Northridge, Long Beach State, UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis, Cal State Fullerton, UC Irvine, and UC Riverside.
