A 41-year-old Maui man wanted on a negligent homicide warrant was arrested Tuesday in California by the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force.
John Nichols had been arrested in January 2012 on suspicion of negligent homicide, but was released pending investigation. After Nichols was charged in June, authorities couldn't find him on Maui, the Marshals Service said in a news release.
Earlier this month, Hana patrol officers received information that Nichols maybe using the name Ricky Johnson and residing somewhere in California, and the information was referred to the fugitive task force, according to the news release.
The Hawaii Fugitive Task Force relayed this information to the U.S. marshals in Central District of California. About 8:15 p.m. Tuesday, deputy U.S. marshals and Huntington Police Department Fugitive Team located and arrested Nichols at a residence located in Huntington Beach, Calif.
Nichols was booked at the Huntington Beach Police Department and is being housed at the Orange County Sheriffs cellblock, where he awaits extradition back to Maui.
The Hawaii Fugitive Task Force is comprised of the Hawaii State Sheriffs, Maui Police Department, Hawaii Police Department, Kauai Police Department, Honolulu Police Department, the state Attorney General's Office, and city prosecutor's office.
