A medical transport helicopter made a hard landing at Kona Airport shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday, injuring a person, federal and state transportation officials reported.

The helicopter landed about at 5:12 p.m., said Caroline Sluyter, state Department of Transportation spokeswoman.

One of the two people on board the AS350 helicopter was transported to a hospital with back pain, and the other was uninjured, the FAA said. Sluyter said the injured person was taken to the hospital to be checked out.

The helicopter was substantially damaged, according to the FAA.

The FAA said it will investigate.
