Inmate to stand trial for rape allegedly committed on work furlough

A state judge ordered Michael Lee Carter Thursday afternoon to stand trial on charges of kidnapping and raping a 21-year-old woman in September while he was on prison work furlough.

Honolulu District Judge Lono Lee upheld the first-degree sex assault and kidnapping charges after the woman testified Carter threatened  and raped her the Sunday of Sept. 15 at Royal Elementary School.

Carter, 45, a convicted serial rapist, is serving a 10-year prison term for sex assault and related charges.

He is also behind held on $500,000 bail on the new charges.

Carter is now scheduled to arraigned in Circuit Court on Nov. 14 when he will be given a trial date.
