Demonstrators turned out in force Oct. 15 as the Kauai County Council considered Bill 2491 to require large agribusinesses on the island to disclose their pesticide use and establish buffer zones.
Kauai County will heighten security at Thursday’s special County Council meeting due to reported threats since Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr.’s veto of Bill 2491.
The 9 a.m. meeting will be held to officially receive the veto. No action will be taken on the veto. The Council might schedule a date for another meeting to consider an override.
The Council has 30 days from Oct. 31, the day Carvalho vetoed the measure, to override it.
The public will be screened by handheld metal detectors by police officers before they are allowed entry into the Historic County Building’s council chambers tomorrow. Bags, containers, food and beverages including water bottles will not be allowed in the chambers.
Bill 2491 would require large agribusinesses to disclose the pesticides they use and implement buffer zones near schools, dwellings, medical facilities, public roadways and waterways.
