LOS ANGELES >> Two men have pleaded not guilty to killing two Chinese graduate students who were shot as they sat in a parked car near the University of Southern California last year.

The Los Angeles Times says 20-year-old Javier Bolden and 21-year-old Bryan James entered the pleas Thursday to murder charges.

Prosecutors say the men killed engineering students Ming Qu (KOO) and Ying Wu a mile from campus in April of last year while stealing their cellphones. Authorities say GPS data was used to track Wu's phone, leading to the arrests.

At a preliminary hearing last month, prosecutors played a recording of a wiretapped phone call between Barnes and Bolden, in which they apparently discussed the attack on the students.

How sad for those innocent students to have their productive lives ended for the price of two lousy phones. I tell my family if they're confronted to surrender their belongings quickly. Personally, I'd do the same, unless they're gonna kidnap and put me in the trunk, I'd fight to the death right there, instead of dying where they can conveniently dispose of you, where no one can find you.

you understand that the death penalty is :1) not applied universally - if you are rich and/or white chances are you won't get death, 2) average time waiting for numerous appeals - 15 years, 3) cost of incarceration and appeals 2.5 million dollars; and I could go on. LIFE without parole is the best answer. No air conditioning, recreation facilities, etc. Make life prisons without benefits.

In NO WAY were these students at fault for what happened, but to be sitting in a parked car in South Central LA around 2-3 am is not a smart thing to do... God bless them and their families.

The media hates to report this fact, but: There is a rising tide of black on Asian crime in the United States. They never post the picture of the perpetrators unless it's a white on black crime. San Francisco reported that 85% of physical assault crimes against Asians were from African Americans. In 2009 the Justice Department found that black students were systematically beating and abusing Asian students over a several year period in Philadelphia. In 2010 older Asian women were targeted by five black teenagers, two female, who did not rob, but assaulted and beat them. Marion Barry, mayor of DC at the time, said, "we have to do something about these Asians coming in and opening dirty businesses and taking the opportunity away from blacks." In Asian communities, it's known that if an Asian women is raped, it's almost gauranteed from a black man if she is also brutally beat up. This occured in Tampa FL after an 18 year old Vietnamese girl was left blind and brain damaged from being punched and choked. Obviously most of these hate crimes are being committed by young blacks, where the unemployment rate is around 50%. Still, a harken back to my own experience in 5th grade when blacks were bussed into our mostly white school in northern CA. The first day, the teacher's wallet went missing. She was used to leaving it in her purse all those years before forced integration. The second day a Japanese guy got a bloody nose from a large black girl. A week later a black girl beat up a Chinese girl. Blacks seem to feel disrespected by Asians which gives them the right to assault them. They used to victimize Mexicans too untill the Mexicans fought back.

I agree with that, just shows that African-Americans are/can be just as racist as anyone else.

True! White, black, Asian...anyone can be racist. If you ever go to Japan, there are certain places that are "For Japanese Only!" The Japanese word for that escapes me, but they actually mean ethnic Japanese citizens only! Japanese from Hawaii or anywhere else are still excluded. Sounds almost like pre-1950's America, yet it exists in Japan.

It actually wouln't bother me a bit if any private establishment put a sign excluding other races from patronizing their establishment. If I knew the place was prejudice against a group, I wouldn't want to give them any business and could give my business to a similar, non racsist business. But if I went into a place where the owner hated Jews, but didn't give any indication of his feelings, I wouldn't be able to make an informed decision. But unlike Japan, where you are simply excluded from a business, racsism hate crimes , in the form of robbery, assault, rape, and murder put a target on your back. You never know when it's coming, you have no control, and the consequences are alot more severe.

My condolences to the family of the victims. Another case of black young men committing murder. The statistics show high black crime. The media in general is not publishing, let alone print it was again black young men. Only when a black man dies from another ethnicity, then its a hate crime, which statistically does not happen often (for many decades). And New York wants to get rid of "Stop and Frisk" because they target the high crime areas, which happens to be predominantly black neighborhoods. The ones that like the Stop and Frisk policy the most....the black people (victims) from that community. Since the policy, crime has been reduced drastically. When the policy is gone....the good people in that community will be less safe. Stupid.
