A driver of a fuel tanker died Friday after his truck crashed on Hawaii island.

The truck was traveling in the makai direction on Kawaihae Road when it ran off the highway and overturned between the 63-and 64-mile markers shortly after 2 p.m. Friday, police said.

Police said the driver was pinned inside the vehicle and died at the scene.

The cab of the truck separated from the frame of the vehicle and fuel was leaking from a broken pipe when firefighters arrived on scene, according to a Fire Department report.

About 1,900 gallons of diesel fuel spilled. A replacement tank transferred the remaining fuel from the overturned truck, police said. About 6,500 gallons of fuel was recovered.

Police withheld the identity of the driver pending positive identification and the notification of his family.

Both lanes of traffic were closed on Kawaihae Road for about 6 hours while the accident scene was cleared.

Negotiating a turn with a heavy truck is little different than doing the same with a BMW. The truck's center of gravity is top heavy. I can't stand when a sports car beeps their horn following a truck that is turning at a slow rate of speed for safety reasons.

Professional drivers need to take their job more seriously, even if it means slowing down.

If you are not a truck driver dont comment on this article with some stupid remarks. The only thing damaged was the loss of the truck and of course the drivers life, so as far as I can see he did his job professionally he kept the truck under control until he found a way out and no one else was hurt or killed, You dont know what it takes to handle the rig like he did at that moment. As a truck driver I can only guess what went wrong, Kawaihae road is a unforgiving road steep and long, lots of turns, I have my opinion of what happened but keep them to my self. I pray for the drivers family, may he the driver rest in peace.
