The Kauai County Council Friday picked Mason Chock in a 4-2 vote to fill the seat vacated by former Vice Chairwoman Nadine Nakamura.

In Friday's special Council meeting, Chock and KipuKai Kualii were nominated from among 18 applicants.

Council Chairman Jay Furfaro, councilwoman JoAnn Yukimura and councilmen Gary Hooser and Tim Bynum voted for Chock while Councilmen Mel Rapozo and Ross Kagawa voted for Kualii, who served as a councilmember from April 2011 to December 2012.

A new councilmember was selected to fill the seat vacated by Nakamura who resigned Oct. 31 to serve as managing director.

The decision to name Chock comes a day after the Council delayed action on a controversial pesticide measure Thursday afternoon, failing to line up enough votes to override Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr.'s veto.

The Council is scheduled to reconvene today to again consider an override.

The audacity of Jay to ignore the government procedural laws on conducting a meeting and fact that yesterday's Kauai County Council Meeting Agenda had no listing of a seventh councilman member entitled to vote for the override or anything regarding the selection process to vote for one. Did the advice Jay got from corporation council procedurally and lawfully correct? Someone needs to follow up on hold Jay accountable. I believe if Mason Chock has the quality of a true leader he should request after he gets sworn in to recues himself on voting on the override. That would be the honorable and political correct thing to do. I would think the people of Kauai would understand and putting that kind of pressure and expectation on Mason to make a decision of this magnitude is unfair and not right.
