HILO >> A 19-year-old student has recanted her story that a man with a knife attempted to sexually assault her at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.

Capt. Robert Wagner of the Hilo Criminal Investigation Division tells the Hawaii Tribune-Herald  that the Hawaii Community College sophomore who works at UH-Hilo has acknowledged the incident she reported Nov. 19 never happened.

Police are investigating a possible case of filing a false police report.

UH officials scheduled a forum afterward for students to talk about their concerns in light of the attack.

Wagner says police detected inconsistencies in the story and the woman acknowledged she made up the story.

The woman has returned to her home on Oahu.

Director of university relations Jerry Chang says he hopes she will issue an apology.
