Gov. Neil Abercrombie ordered that the flags of the United States and of Hawaii be flown at half-staff at all state offices and the Hawaii National Guard until sunset Monday in honor of Nelson Mandela who died today.

"Nelson Mandela reminded us all of our common humanity. He was the symbol and the living reality of what perseverance and determination a human being can bring to bear on behalf of the freedom of us all," the governor said.

President Barack Obama also ordered the U.S. flag to be flown at half-staff for the same period.
