Hawaii plans $2.5M in fixes to Big Island harbor

By Associated Press

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii >> Hawaii officials plan $2.5 million in fixes and improvements to a harbor on the Big Island as the second phase of a project for commercial and recreational boats.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported today (http://bit.ly/1dneY8p) that the state Department of Land and Natural Resources is planning the road and system improvements at the Kawaihae Small Boat Harbor in South Kohala. The work that includes road widening, new water lines and other improvements is expected to take nine months.

A draft environmental assessment says the improvements will help current fishing and boating activities, and increase access for surfers, beach-goers and diving and fishing spots.

The assessment says it does not expect any endangered species to be threatened by the project, though green sea turtles feed in the harbor area.
