The suspect in at least three rapes in the Kaheka and Liliha areas appeared in Honolulu District Court this morning to face rape, burglary and kidnapping charges in a Dec. 1 case.
Police arrested Asofitu Fio, 30, at his apartment in Liliha Friday in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a 30-year-old woman on Dec. 1 at her Kaheka area apartment.
Fio is also being investigated as possible suspect in the sexual assaults of a 22-year-old woman on May 28 on Ahana Street and a 25-year-old woman on June 13 at her Aala Street apartment.
Fio was charged Sunday with two counts of first-degree sexual assault, two counts of third-degree sexual assault, first-degree burglary and kidnapping In the Dec. 1 case, in which a man allegedly forced his way into a woman's Cedar Street apartment at 11:30 a.m. and sexually assaulted her.
He is being held in lieu of $1 million bail.
Honolulu Police Chief Louis Kealoha said the arrest came after police conducted an extensive surveillance operation in the Kaheka area involving more than 60 officers and more than 1,000 hours of work.
Criminal Investigation Division Maj. Richard Robinson said the man matched the description of the suspect and officers conducting surveillance questioned him. Robison said his answers raised more suspicions and officers recovered DNA from the suspect, which matched DNA evidence from the Dec. 1 rape case.
Fio's criminal record includes only one prior conviction, for disorderly conduct, a petty misdemeanor, related to a Nov. 5, 2011, incident. Fio was convicted on April 9, 2012, and fined $150.
