Suspect in serial rape cases appears in District Court

By Star-Advertiser staff

LAST UPDATED: 02:23 p.m. HST, Dec 16, 2013

The suspect in at least three rapes in the Kaheka and Liliha areas appeared in Honolulu District Court this morning to face rape, burglary and kidnapping charges in a Dec. 1 case.

Police arrested Asofitu Fio, 30,  at his apartment in Liliha Friday in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a 30-year-old woman on Dec. 1 at her Kaheka area apartment.

Fio is also being investigated as possible suspect in the sexual assaults of a 22-year-old woman on May 28 on Ahana Street and a 25-year-old woman on June 13 at her Aala Street apartment.

Fio was charged Sunday with two counts of first-degree sexual assault, two counts of third-degree sexual assault, first-degree burglary and kidnapping In the Dec. 1 case, in which a man allegedly forced his way into a woman's Cedar Street apartment at 11:30 a.m. and sexually assaulted her.

He is being held in lieu of $1 million bail.

Honolulu Police Chief Louis Kealoha said the arrest came after police conducted an extensive surveillance operation in the Kaheka area involving more than 60 officers and more than 1,000 hours of work.

Criminal Investigation Division Maj. Richard Robinson said the man matched the description of the suspect and officers conducting surveillance questioned him. Robison said his answers raised more suspicions and officers recovered DNA from the suspect, which matched DNA evidence from the Dec. 1 rape case.

Fio's criminal record includes only one prior conviction, for disorderly conduct, a petty misdemeanor, related to a Nov. 5, 2011, incident. Fio was convicted on April 9, 2012, and fined $150.

He needs to be "fixed".

How? There's no protocol for such procedures, I would think, unless the progressive liberals have embarked on a regressive program when addressing sex crimes.

I'll revise your statement for you. If he is found guilty he needs to be fixed. If we were to go around "fixing" people based on accusations, the whole world would be fixed based on your incomplete assessment of this and most situations. Amazing how people can throw out the baby along with the bathwater without even checking the temperature of the bath-water.

Yes I know he needs to be found guilty first. The article does mention a match between his DNA and the rape kit DNA so in effect he is definitely the guy who raped at least one of the women. Hopefully the justice system will not drop the ball here.

Fixed from what? His behavior is not his choice, rather how he was made; therefore it really shouldn't even be a crime. This is the direction we are heading.

Must be very embarrassing for his wife and family. :-( They got him on DNA so he's most likely the guy they were looking for.

with so much publicity, unfortunately this guy isn't allowed out on "pending investigation" and MAY NOT get probation, the usual sentence (judge Ahn gave a guy probation after a rape conviction of a 14 year old girl), he can only hope Ahn is his judge.

Hopefully HPD don't mess up and he gets off on a technicality. For instance, how did HPD get his DNA sample?

The fact that he doesn't have a history of raping women makes it seem unlikely that this is the guy.
