Akron forward Demetrius Treadwell (1) reaches to control a rebound over Oregon State forward Daniel Gomis

In a game attended by President Barack Obama and the First Family, Akron defeated Oregon State 83-71 Sunday at the Stan Sheriff Center to advance to today’s Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic semifinals.

It was the first time in five OSU games attended by Obama over the last four years that the Beavers — coached by Obama’s brother-in-law Craig Robinson — were defeated.

Akron forward Demetrius Treadwell led the Zips (6-2) of the Mid-American Conference with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Akron seized control early in the second half after OSU (6-3) drew to within a point at halftime.

The Zips play No. 17 Iowa State at 11:30 a.m. semifinal. The Cyclones defeated George Mason 79-67 in the day’s first quarterfinal.

Host Hawaii will play Boise State of the Mountain West Conference in the last quarterfinal of the day, starting at roughly 8:30 p.m.
