President enjoys golf, followed by beach time with his family

President Barack Obama enjoyed a morning round of golf followed by a visit to the beach Monday afternoon, joining his family at Pyramid Rock Beach at Marine Corps Base Hawaii after finishing 18-holes at the Mid Pacific Country Club early Monday afternoon.

The Obamas left the beach at about 4:30 p.m.and spent the rest of the evening at their rented Kailua vacation home.

Reporters covering the president were not allowed to photograph the president at the beach.

But the White House did allow photos of the president golfing Monday.

The president's motorcade left his Kailua rental home and arrived at the Mid-Pacific Country Club in Lanikai at 9:20 a.m.

A media pool following the president was briefly allowed to photograph the president on the 9th hole, but was too far away to see what Obama scored on the hole.

Later, on the 18th hole, which is visible through a fence from the public sidewalk, the president waved to spectators who had gathered to watch him.

He even singled out a protester, dressed in a polar bear costume, who had earlier been holding a sign against the Keystone Pipeline. It was unclear if the president saw the sign, reporters said.

"Hey polar bear," Obama said, laughing.

The crowd applauded when Obama, after taking six practice swings, made a chip shot to the green. His follow-up putt came close to the hole, but didn't go in.

The president golfed with aide and frequent golfing partner Marvin Nicholson, childhood friend Bobby Titcomb and physician and close friend Eric Whitaker.

Earlier in the morning, Obama went for a 45-minute workout at the gym at Marine Corps Base Hawaii.

Why can't the President and his family have their privacy while on vacation? Sometimes, such as when they attend a basketball game, cameras are unavoidable. But they should be allowed to have some time on the beach without being photographed.
