Utility work closes Punahou Street freeway onramp, exit lanes today

By Star-Advertiser staff

LAST UPDATED: 08:37 a.m. HST, Jan 06, 2014

Electrical utility work has closed lanes on the Punahou Street H-1 exit and onramp between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. today for the safety of work crews and the public, a Hawaiian Electric Co. spokesman said.

The Punahou westbound onramp is closed, as well as the two middle lanes of the eastbound Punahou exit.

The lefthand lane, which turns left toward Manoa, and the right-hand lane, which turns right toward Waikiki, will remain open.

Special duty police officers will direct traffic through the area.

Why isn't this done at night in conjunction with the H1 renovation?

Or this past week while Maryknoll and Punahou were on Winter Break? Instead, they pick the first day back to school. Brilliant.

Overtime control, so I hope HEI will keep rates in check, instead of raising them, in case they botch this repair and have to do it again.

No worries one third of us do not know what is the BCS Championship game, per the HSA online Big Q.

This paragraph doesn't make sense. It's contradictory. The two lanes that remain open are also the two middle lanes that will be closed. "The Punahou on-ramp will be completely closed and the two middle lanes of the eastbound Punahou exit will be closed. The right-hand lane which turns left toward Manoa will remain open. The left-hand lane which turns right toward Waikiki will also remain open."

The whole thing doesn't make any sense and all. I get on and off the H1 at Punahou everyday, and I am completely confused. Can someone who actually knows what they are talking about rewrite the story? As for when they are doing it; why is it a surprise to anyone? We close the freeway in both directions in town, and also schedule work on streets that everyone is forced on to as a result of the freeway closure. Nothing the DOT does anymore surprises me.

Wow, the DOT just cemented their reputation for gross incompetence. They pick the second worst day of the year to close these exits and on ramps ....

This has been ongoing for over a year now on and off again. The DOT really is incompetent aren't they? Should be no surprise as incompetent Abercrombie appointed the person responsible for this stupidity.

The stupid, incompetent, and brain dead Abercrombie appointee's name is Glenn Okimoto, Director of Transportation, and he is probably not aware or even care about this H-1 on-ramp and exit ramp closures.

Sometimes a disaster needs to occur, before brains wake up, and even then, brains don't wake up, so we just need to pull the plug, and let people pass away in a Hospice.

I wonder what the Punahou parents are going to do since they now can't drop their kids off right on the Punahou off-ramp like they normally do daily?
