A weather system northeast of the Big Island may bring an increased chance of showers tonight.
It may be mild compared to the "polar vortex" chilling much of the mainland U.S. this week, but Hawaii’s relatively cool weather is expected to continue through tonight, forecasters say.
The National Weather Service in Honolulu says that a low pressure system northeast of Hawaii island will bring cool northeast winds to the state through tonight.
Hawaii island is under a high wind advisory until 6 p.m. with north winds of 20 to 35 mph and localized gusts as high as 50 mph.
Hawaii island civil defense officials have received numerous reports of downed tree limbs in the Puna district, according to the weather service which warns that the strong gusts can make driving difficult.
The low pressure system will move closer to the islands Wednesday, bringing the chance of increased showers to all islands, according to forecasters.
High temperatures in Honolulu are expected to top off in the low 80s this week, with overnight temperatures continuing to dip into the 60s — chilly by Hawaii standards, but no match for the -50 wind chill factor felt in International Falls, Minn., on Monday.
