Rainbow Warriors hire Utah State coach as defensive coordinator

By Stephen Tsai

LAST UPDATED: 05:03 a.m. HST, Jan 08, 2014

Utah State assistant coach Kevin Clune has accepted an offer to become the University of Hawaii football team's defensive coordinator, UH head coach Norm Chow announced.

He will replace Thom Kaumeyer, who was the Rainbow Warriors' defensive coordinator the past two seasons. Kaumeyer was told his one-year contract would not be extended after it expires in March.

"I'm fired up," Chow said of the hire.

Clune is expected to be paid about $160,000 a year, compared with the $250,000 that Kaumeyer was paid.

Clune has coached Utah State's linebackers the past five seasons. This past season, the Aggies were ranked seventh nationally in scoring defense (17.1 points per game) and 12th in total defense (330.9 yards a game). In contrast, UH was 113th in scoring defense (38.8 points) and 115th in total defense (494.7 yards) in 2013.

Chow said Clune brings experience in facing the multiple offenses from the Mountain West Conference. UH and Utah State are MWC members.

He was chosen from among 39 candidates who officially applied.

Chow fired Miano (not renewing his job is the SAME as firing like Kaumeyer) because Miano is competent and players would look more to Miano than Chow to lead them no way Chow would re-hire Miano. I don't know about someone saying Chow only hires Mormons but really fishy that this linebacker coach who will now be defensive coordinator is from a Utah program. The guy has no experience as a defensive coordinator at the Div 1A level but that was expected as no halfway decent, PROVEN defensive coordinator at the Div1A level or NFL would ever take the position under Chow.

From Utah State so it's a good bet he's a Mormon? If so, it's another indication that Chow doesn't do what's best for the program but does what's best for his cult. His cult leaders are pulling the strings and another nail in the coffin for the UH football program as it becomes an affiliate member of the Mormon cult where 2nd tiered cult member players ae directed our way and UH becomes another breeding ground for the insidious cult.

The amazing thing is that there were apparently 38 applicants who were less impressive (an indication of national interest in working for UH/Chow??). Hope Chow is right on this one. But, for the immediately foreseeable future, this grand hire will result in zero program momentum. Hope this guy has stud recruits in his pocket.

It doesn't matter too much to me whether Clune is Mormon or otherwise. As long as he does a good job and gets results (and he does have a pretty good resume), then fine. But if Chow is hiring PRIMARILY because of his religious beliefs that's another story. Also as far as getting some really "big name" coaches, that does not guarantee success. Plus, we couldn't afford them anyway. Unless one of these "big name" coaches are willing to take a HUGE pay cut, we're not getting them! Duane Akina is at TEXAS. Dave Aranda, whom Chow let go, is now at WISCONSIN. Both men probably make at least 2-3 times more than Chow. Why would you take a demotion and come to Hawaii?

It matters to Chow. Out of over 30 applicants, is it just a coincidence? And is it just coincidence that the young kid he brought in as graduate assistance from (where?) with NO experience as a coach is likely to be our next qb coach, if not our offensive coordinator? So, it's just a coincidence that the top assistant positions will be filled by Chow's cult members out of so many applicants? PUKE TIME!

Dear Norm, It has been speculated that your position as Head Coach of our University of Hawaii Rainbow Warrior football team is in Jeopardy. Well, some of the losses could be attributed to giving up too many points, unnecessarily. We all hope that your hire of Kevin Clune will transform our defensive unit into a great one. Looking into the past, we learned from June Jones' transformation of the 1998 0-12 team to 1999's 9-4 bowl team, which took just on year, meaning most of the players on said 9-4 team were from the 0-12 team. Why do I point that out? With Mr. Clune being part of a very successful nationally ranked defensive unit at Utah State, our Rainbow Warriors could expect the same kind of turnaround that June oversaw in 1999, which was an offensive turnaround. We all know your expertise had been as an offensive coordinator, most notably on the 1984 National Champion BYU team coached by LaVell Edwards. Your years of success has been as a brilliant offensive mind. Please note that many who have had success in the coaching ranks, both on offense or defense, have not been able to translate that success into the Head Coach position. Many in this HSA forum has called for your replacement. Best Wishes, Governor Abercrombie. p.s. Let's Go 'Bows!!!! Let's Go 'Bows!!!! Let's Go 'Bows!!!!
