Construction of a key part of the Clarence T. C. Ching Athletic Complex will meet an NCAA-mandated completion date this month, University of Hawaii officials said today.

Both Stephen Meder, assistant vice-chancellor for physical, environmental and long-range planning, and athletic director Ben Jay said they have been advised that the Jan. 28 deadline for readiness of first-floor locker room, offices and meeting facilities will be met.

The complex will be home to several sports, most notably women's track and field and soccer.

The NCAA had several times allowed UH to push back deadlines for completion of the $13.39 million facility that had originally been scheduled for completion in 2013. Completion had been tied to UH's Title IX plan to achieve gender equity in athletics.

But last year the NCAA threatened to withhold certification of the UH athletic program unless the complex met a Jan. 28 deadline for the first-floor facilities. UH said it had been warned that sanctions could include having its teams banned from NCAA championship events.

The UH Board of Regents ordered an audit of the project. That report has yet to be issued, UH said.

While the first floor is to be completed by Jan. 28, much of the rest is due to be finished by the end of March, UH officials said.
