No. 14 Hawaii falls to No. 7 UCLA in volleyball

Senior hitter Jace Olsen and sophomore hitter Siki Zarkovic each had 13 kills but it was not enough as No. 14 Hawaii fell to No. 7 UCLA 25-19, 14-25, 25-19, 25-16 in Saturday night’s championship match of the 20th Outrigger Hotels Volleyball Invitational at the Stan Sheriff Center.

It was the fourth consecutive OHVI title for the Bruins (3-1, 3-0 OHVI), their ninth in 14 appearances. Senior Robart Page, a 7-foot opposite, led UCLA with 15 kills and sophomore middle Trent Kersten added 10 with no errors in 15 attempts. 

Page was named the three-day event’s most outstanding player. He was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Gonzalo Quiroga and Steve O’Dell; Hawaii’s Zarkovic and Nick West; Nick Goodell of Penn State and Driss Guessous of Ohio State

Hawaii (2-1, 2-1) was seeking a seventh championship in their own event and first since 2010. 

In what ended up being the third-place match, Goodell put down a match-high 13 kills for No. 11 Penn State in a 28-26, 25-20, 25-19 sweep of tNo. 12 Ohio State. The Nittany Lions (1-2, 1-2) needed 77 minutes to dispatch the Buckeyes (0-3, 0-3) and finish third for the eighth time in 19 tournament appearances.
