A man was airlifted from a mountainous trail on Maui by a helicopter Tuesday after fainting while hiking.

The man in his late 50s or early 60s fainted five minutes into a group hike on the Lahaina-Pali trail, and a helicopter was dispatched after fire rescue workers received the alarm at 8:14 a.m., fire officials said.

He suffered some abrasions and was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.

Maui County Fire spokesman Lee Mainaga said the decision to fly the man out of the hiking area was due to the rains that fell earlier, making the already rocky trail even more slippery than normal.
