A Hawaii House committee is wading into a longtime gambling debate — but not to consider legalizing it.
The House Judiciary Committee today planned to debate a bill to add gambling to a list of offenses that can result in civil nuisance lawsuits.
The bill held over from the 2013 session is first on the agenda for the committee in its first hearing since the session began Wednesday.
The measure would allow people to sue over gambling if it creates a nuisance. The nuisance law covers other activities like fireworks or drug manufacturing.
Hawaii is one of only two states in the U.S. with no forms of legalized gambling, through lotteries or casinos.
The committee also plans to debate whether children should be allowed to use tanning beds.
