UH West Oahu to refund $64 fee for nonexistent services

University of Hawaii West Oahu students will be issued $64 refunds for fees the university said it charged for nonexistent services.

The fees, collected last fall, were for transportation, technology and health services.

The university said in anews release this afternoon that it's unclear how many refunds will be issued because staff members still need to review payment records of the 2,400 enrolled students to determine who is eligible. It said students in good standing who directly paid the fees will receive a refund.

UH said the school is now working to establish the services the fees were intended to support.

"This unusual situation in which approved fees were charged for services before the services existed arose as UHWO staff and student government were working to establish completely new student services at the brand new UHWO campus," the university said in a statement.

A proposed bill introduced by Senate President Donna Mercado Kim would prohibit UH from imposing fees for services not available to students "at the time the fees are charged." Senate Bill 2280 has yet to be scheduled for a hearing.

Ha! I don't know who to give credit to for bringing it to light, but I saw this first on the news as an investigative report. The UHWO admin guy was so flippant about it. His response to why the fee was charged for no services rendered, was "that's life" and students have to learn to deal with it. I was amazed by his response. What a d*Ck.

Totally agree. How on earth did someone like this get into a senior position in the university. All of the words that I can think of to describe him would cause my post to be "sent for review." LOL

The guy that brought it to attention to the news is a student. He questioned the fees for non-existent services. The last name of the Vice-Chancellor that said that ridiculous response is Hokoana. I haven't seen a response from him after UHWO said they were giving the refunds. I hope he gets fired, then, Mr. Hokoana, "that's life."

We don't need a Leg bill for this, just intelligence and decency by West Oahu bureaucrats

UHWO. Jobs for cronies U Make it part of UH Manoa already and eliminate the overhead of Administration. Offer popular courses to avoid daily commutes. Easier for pros to commute than classrooms full of students.

Welcome to the realworld what ever your name is from UHWO. I attended West Oahu last year and that's the same TV and Xbox. Makes you feel proud of your alma mater.
