Pro Football Hall of Famer Jerry Rice helped bless land in East Kapolei today long planned for a regional shopping center named Ka Makana Alii.

Rice was invited by project developer DeBartolo Development LLC, a Florida-based company founded by former San Francisco 49ers owner Edward J. DeBartolo Jr. for whom Rice played for and helped win three Super Bowls.

Construction of the $500 million mall with 1.4 million square feet is expected to begin late this year.

Malls are a failing enterprise. No new malls have been built since 2006 across the country. Why is the DHHL taking this kind of risk? Did we taxpayers put up some money. Mr Rice is a great ball man but he has nothing to do with native Hawaiians.
