How wet is it? Hilo sets rainfall record for second day

Rain is not unusual for Hilo.

But the last couple of days have set new records for rainfall at the Hilo Airport.

The National Weather Service said 3.05 inches fell at the airport on Tuesday, breaking the old record of 1.39 inches set on Jan. 28, 1988.

It’s the second day of record rainfall.

Monday also set a new record with about 2.77 inches, breaking the old record of 1.39, also set in 1988.

Tuesday also set a record for the coldest maximum temperature in Hilo. The high temperature in Hilo was only 70 degrees, braking the old record for the lowest maximum temperature in Hilo of 72, set in 1979.

More rain is falling on Hilo today as moisture from the remnants of a cold front continues to linger over the Big Island.
