Snowplows clearing path to Mauna Kea summit

By Star-Advertiser staff

LAST UPDATED: 12:53 a.m. HST, Jan 31, 2014

Snow plows were clearing a path to the summit of Mauna Kea Thursday morning after several inches fell Wednesday.

Snow could be seen at both summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa Thursday.

The Mauna Kea Access Road was closed at the Visitor Information Station overnight because of ice and snow on the summit roads.

Big Island summits were under a winter storm warning Wednesday and temperatures were below freezing Thursday morning, but had warmed to just above freezing by early afternoon.

Webcam videos showed the storm blow across the mountains Wednesday.
