Large northwest swell prompts high surf advisory

By Star-Advertiser staff

LAST UPDATED: 01:14 a.m. HST, Feb 03, 2014

A large northwest swell that approached the state Sunday prompted weather officials to issue a high surf advisory for the north and west facing shores of the islands from 6 p.m. Sunday night to 4 p.m. Monday.

The advisory covers the north- and west-facing shores of Kauai, Niihau, Oahu, Molokai, the north shores of Maui and the west shores of the Big Island.

The swell is supposed to peak Sunday night and gradually decline Monday.

Waves on the north facing shores are expected to peak at 18 to 24 feet. Surf on the west shores will peak at 12 to 18 feet.

Beachgoers should heed all advice by Ocean Safety officials and exercise caution.
