Cruise ship death in Hawaii ruled accidental

The Medical Examiner’s Office said death of the 87-year-old Salt Lake City man who died Friday after a fall on the cruise ship ms Veendam was accidental.

The cause of death of James C. Harte was cranial cerebral injury caused by an accidental fall, the Medical Examiner’s Office said.

Harte died  Friday — four days after he sustained a head injury while on the Veedam off the coast of  island of Hawaii.

Harte fell and hit his head around 10:30 p.m. Jan. 27. Thursday, he was taken to a hospital on Oahu, where he died.

Police said they do not suspect foul play.

This was the third death on a cruise ship in Hawaiian waters in two months.

On Jan. 2, a 34-year-old Filipino crew member on the crew ship Grand Princess committed suicide by jumping off the vessel 1,100 miles northeast of Hilo.

In November, the Grand Princess was involved in another overboard incident when a 54-year-old woman jumped from the vessel 650 miles northeast of Hilo. The woman’s body was never recovered.

In both deaths, a spokeswoman for the Princess Cruises of Santa Clarita, Calif. declined to identify the victims.
