Rice University has been added to the schedule as the University of Hawaii football team's 13th game for 2014, the schools announced today.

They will play Oct. 4 in Houston. It will be their first meeting since 2004 they were Western Athletic Conference competitors.

The Owls were 10-4 and Conference USA champions in 2013.

Under terms of the agreement, UH said the Owls will play in Aloha Stadium at a yet to be determined date in 2018.

UH has played a 12-game schedule each of the past two seasons and athletic director Ben Jay sought a 13th game for 2014.

The Rainbow Warriors' 2014 non-conference schedule also includes Washington, Oregon State, Northern Iowa and Colorado.

What I don't understand is why this game being played in Houston. I thought the 13th game was granted as an opportunity for UH to make money on an additional home game. I doubt that Rice will pay the kind of money that the big name schools would pay and on top of that it looks like another likely loss.

After all expenses and the appearance fee UH will probably make money, how much I don't know. Maybe that's the only deal UH was able to get. At least it's a home and home, it's tougher to get teams to come here for a single game than it was before teams started playing 12 game schedules and had conference championship games.

Home and home generally means you keep the gate for your home game and bare the expenses to travel to the other school. If that is the case in this instance, UH won't be seeing any monetary benefit until 2018.

Good game for UH. Its and home and home deal so we can look forward to seeing the Owls at Aloha Stadium down the road. Ok I went to a UH-Rice game back in the day in Houston. What I remember was 1) the Rice fans were really cool, many came up to us to say they always wanted to visit Hawaii or to tell us about their visit; 2) they didn't serve beer in their stadium with the exception of the "Owl Club".which I think was accessible only to boosters; 3) I ate "sausage on a stick" which was this really ono grilled sausage that was sort of like a cross between chorizo and a polish sausage. Go Warriors.
