HILO >> The defense attorney of a man on trial for allegedly shooting two Hilo police officers says it was too dark to identify the shooter.

Keaka Martin’s attempted murder trial resumes Monday. Defense attorney Steve Strauss said in his opening statement that Officer Joshua Gouveia was shot by Officer Garret Hatada. Strauss also claims police ignored information about other possible suspects and instead “quickly settled” on Martin.

Strauss told jurors Hatada was shot by the suspect’s weapon, but there’s no evidence that the suspect intended to kill him.

Gouveia and Hatada received gunshot wounds to their legs last year while responding to a report of a man hiding under a car.

Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports Gouveia testified that he started hyperventilating when he was shot by the man under the car.
