Woman run over by tour bus identified

By Star-Advertiser staff

POSTED:

The Medical Examiner's Office has identified  the 73-year-old Waikiki woman who was killed while crossing the street near the Hilton Hawaiian Village Tuesday as Haruko Okabe.

Police said the victim was jaywalking at about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday when she was hit by a Polynesian Adventure Tours bus, driven by a 45-year-old man, heading Diamond Head on Kalia Road.

Police said the woman sustained massive head injuries and was taken in critical condition to the Queen's Medical Center, where she died.

Okabe was Oahu's 12th traffic deaths, compared to 15 at this time last year. She was the fourth person age 67 or older -- and the fifth pedestrian -- to die this year.

That is a bad intersection--cars coming out of the Hilton and finding congestion from the Ala Moana Blvd light and the numerous busses stopping at the bus stop. We have too many tour busses in Waikiki.

serious, the woman was jaywalking, so it might not have been the driver's fault.. Also, that road is pretty wide, so it takes longer for an older person to cross. My condolences to the family.
