A 20-year-old man was charged Wednesday with eight criminal offenses after a woman awoke to find him rummaging through her belongings in her apartment on Hawaii island, police said.

John Small, of Captain Cook, was charged Wednesday with burglary, credit card theft, unauthorized possession of personal information, promoting detrimental drugs, two counts of theft, and two counts of breaking into a vehicle. His bail was set at $68,000.

Small remained at the Kona cellblock Thursday morning pending a court appearance in the afternoon.

Police said that about 4:35 a.m. Tuesday, a 75-year-old woman awoke to find an unknown man in a green-hooded sweatshirt going through items in her Kealakekua apartment. After the man fled, the woman discovered that her purse had been taken from her truck.

Shortly afterward, officers found Small wearing clothes that matched the description of the burglar and arrested him. Police recovered the victim’s property as well as property from another vehicle at the same apartment complex and 4.9 grams of marijuana.
