UC Irvine tops Hawaii in volleyball in 4 sets

Reigning national and conference player of the week Brook Sedore put down a match-high 13 kills but it was not enough for No. 8 Hawaii as two-time defending national champion UC Irvine continued their dominance over the Rainbow Warriors with a 22-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-14 victory in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation volleyball match Friday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Anteaters (12-8, 9-7) got 12 kills each from Scott Kevorken and Zack La Cavera in defeating the Rainbow Warriors (11-7, 9-6) for an eighth consecutive meeting. The match lasted 2 hours and 8 minutes

It was just the second home conference loss for Hawaii, which had won its last seven in the Sheriff Center. Jake Olsen added 11 kills and libero Kolby Kanetake had 12 digs.

Hawaii finished with 8.5 blocks, seven of those coming in Set 1, including three straight to open the match. The Warriors had no blocks in the final two sets.

Jeremy Dejno and Connor Hughes added 11 kills for the Anteaters winning their third straight. Libero Michael Brinkley finished with 17 digs, one off his career high.

The matched turned midway through the second set when UCI changed its setter, going with senior Daniel Stork, and trading opposites, using junior La Cavera.  Down 18-12, the Anteaters tied it at 21, finishing out the set on a 6-0 run.

Also hurting the Warriors was their serving, with 18 errors and just one ace. UCI finished with six aces and 15 service errors.

The teams meet again at 5 p.m. Sunday.
