UC Irvine holds off Hawaii in 5 in volleyball

Jeremy Dejno put down 21 kills and Zack La Cavera added 13 kills and six aces as No. 8 UC Irvine held off Hawaii 25-20, 17-25, 25-15, 15-25, 18-16 Sunday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

It was the ninth consecutive win for the Anteaters (13-9, 10-7 MPSF) over the Rainbow Warriors (13-8, 9-7). It was the first time this season that Hawaii, also ranked eighth, dropped a two-match series at home.

The Rainbow Warriors were led by Siki Zarkovic’s 19 kills and 17 from Brook Sedore. Setter Joby Ramos added 45 assists and 11 digs, and libero Kolby Kanetake had 10 digs.

Hawaii led 12-9 in Set 5 but couldn’t close it out. Both teams had two match points, UCI with the first at 14-13. Hawaii with the next two at 15-14 and 16-15.

The Anteaters scored the last three points, getting kills by Dejno and Connor Hughes, and a hitting error by Zarkovic in winning their fourth straight.

The match lasted 2 hours, 24 minutes.
