A City Council committee next week will discuss a proposal to establish a city motor vehicle registration office at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

The pilot program was to be announced Thursday by Joint Base Commander Jeffrey W. James, Mayor Kirk Caldwell, and Councilmembers Breene Harimoto, Ron Menor and Kymberly Pine.

If approved by the City Council, the Navy would provide the space and the city would transfer two existing staff on limited days. 

Military out-of-state car registrations are typically the lengthiest transactions handled by city facilities. Pearl Harbor was selected for its central location on Oahu. The service would be open to all military personnel, their family members and civilian employees from all military bases. 

 The proposal will be on the March 20 agenda of the City Council Intergovernmental Affairs and Human Services Committee.
