Bicyclist struck by tour bus dies

A bicyclist struck by a tour bus Monday while he was riding in a crosswalk on Puuhale Road and Nimitz Highway died Wednesday, the Medical Examiner's Office said.

An autopsy will be conducted Friday to determine the cause of death for Wallace Afuso, 44, of Kalihi, the Medical Examiner's Office said.

Afuso was riding a bicycle heading west to the airport in the right lane on Nimitz Highway when he was hit by a Travel Plaza Transportation bus, driven by a 43-year-old man, was headed west to the airport in the right lane on Nimitz.

The bicyclist was riding makai in the crosswalk on Puuhale against the light, police said.

Honolulu is dangerous for bicyclists yet our mayor has plans of installing a bike lane on King Street knowing the bicyclists will interact with all the cars turning left. He maybe wishing accidents will not occur and if he is right, my apologies for being negative on this bike lane. But should just ONE accident occur, our mayor should scrap the bike lane. Are you listening Mr. Mayor?
