Water main project to cause delays on Kapiolani Boulevard

By Star-Advertiser Staff

LAST UPDATED: 10:40 a.m. HST, Mar 30, 2014

Roadwork is scheduled to begin Monday, March 31st to replace the water main on Kapiolani Boulevard and lane closures and traffic delays can be expected, the Board of Water Supply announced.

The BWS is hiring a contractor to replace 2,800 feet of a 12-inch main that was installed in 1938 and approximately 1,000 feet of an 8-inch main installed in 1953 along Kapiolani Boulevard from McCully Street to Date Street.

The roadwork will take place Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Lane closures will be necessary at various locations throughout the work area, the BWS said.

The renewal of the water system will improve fire protection, enhance water service to residents in the area and reduce future water main breaks, according to the BWS.

The project is expected to be completed in December 2014.

A 4 month project to take 8 months and that is if the project finishes on-time. Ridiculous!

Reminder all union contracts in the Nei are in three month intervals. This one is right on at 9 months. However, expect there be to be problems, unforeseen issues, the usual Nei issues. Expect contract completion to go on to 12 or 15 months. Just another day in the Nei.

So now we add this to the Vineyard and H-1 projects? Clearly the DOT and the city are not communicating or they are intentionally taking our #1 worst traffic rating to galactic proportions? It's like we are New Jersey or something and we have some bridges to do traffic studies on....

2014? Ha! And the Date St. project goes from one stage to another with no end in sight. The people living along the four or so blocks Ewa of the intersection of Date & Kapahulu should protest to have the contractor secure the steel plates over the trenches because they have to put up with a constant banging and booming as vehicles pass over the plates. The Mayor should go check it out. It's only a matter of time before a moped, bike, or motorcycle rider has an accident because of the terrible condition of the road surface in that area...than look out for the lawsuit.
