Island Air orders new planes

By Star-Advertiser staff

LAST UPDATED: 11:46 a.m. HST, Mar 31, 2014

Island Air plans to add new turboprop planes to its fleet as part of an ongoing restructuring and expansion strategy, the company announced Monday.

The interisland carrier said it has ordered two 71-seat Bombardier Aerospace Q400 NextGen aircraft, and could later expand the order with up to four more planes.

The purchase of the two initial planes is valued at $60.9 million based on Bombardier's list price for the Q400.

Island Air and Canada-based Bombardier did not announce a delivery date for the new planes.

I would encourage you to give them a try. Flew on Q400 from Newark to Washington DC and it was a good flight.

1.Too little, Too late. 2. Mix fleet? bad recipe. Let's no get our hope too high. It will amount to little more than a shuttle to Lanai where the owner investments are. Low fares to a $500 a night hotels? Just what Hawaii needs.

Larry has a CEO, although he seems not to be the brightest light in the house, to run the airline for him but obviously is not in charge. The Q400 is a good airplane, more than adequate to fly to Lanai. Because by the look of it, Island Air is just an air taxi service.

Can you please start flying to Hilo and/or Kona??

Exactly. Since go! left, Hawaiian has already started to squeeze the Hilo and Kona markets. Hawaiian now has a monopoly on the Big Island. Unfortunate for the Big Island folk.

I also hope Island Air gets to the Big Island soon. These $90 one way fares are too steep. I prefer jets, but my pilot friend tells me the new Q400's are like the hot rods of turbo props and are just as fast as Hawaiian's jets. So if Island's fares are reasonable and they are reliable I'll give them a try.
