Lingering unstable weather conditions are keeping the chance of showers in the forecast through Tuesday, especially for windward and mauka areas and on the slopes of the Big Island.

National Weather Service forecasters said the weather system that brought thunderstorms, hail and snow to Hawaii island summits is weakening, but is still creating conditions that could bring trade wind showers that could become briefly heavy. Thunderstorms are also possible over Big Island slopes through Tuesday.

Temperatures at the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa are below or near-freezing and the snow may stick around for at least a couple of days.

The road to the summit is open Monday.

In Honolulu, the forecast calls for mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies with isolated showers and highs from 78 to 84 degrees. Overnight lows will range between 64 and 73 degrees.
