Darryl Higgins, 31, has been charged with allegedly assaulting a police officer who was trying to arrest him for speeding and driving a stolen car.

An Oahu grand jury Tuesday indicted a 31-year-old Ewa Beach man on charges that he dragged a plainclothes officer 150 feet while fighting for control of a stolen car speeding away from a McCully gas station last week.

Darryl Higgins was indicted on charges of first-degree attempted assault, first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer and auto theft. His bail was set at $250,000.

Three plainclothes officers tried to arrest the suspect on March 25 after trailing a suspected stolen car to a gas station near Washington Middle School, police said. One of the officers was dragged onto Punahou Street while the officer and the suspect fought for the car’s gear shift. The suspect hit a truck on Punahou Street and was rammed by a van.

The car the suspect was driving had been stolen a day earlier, police said.
