Hilo sees record rainfall

Record rain fell on Hilo Tuesday.
The National Weather Service recorded 5.17 inches in Hilo, breaking the old record of 3.57 inches set in 1972.
The area was under a flood advisory for most of Tuesday.
Cloudy conditions with some showers continued Wednesday morning in Hilo, but the rain was not as heavy as Tuesday’s downpour.
Tuesday’s wet weather also left several new inches of snow on Mauna Kea. The road to the summit, however, was closed Wednesday morning because of icy and snowy roads.
The forecast calls for scattered showers Wednesday afternoon in Hilo and a chance of afternoon showers and possible thunderstorms in leeward areas on the Big Island.
The rest of the state should see partly sunny skies with windward and mauka showers.
Winds will be from the east and northeast at 15 to 20 mph with higher gusts. Highs today should range from 80 to 85 degrees.
