Woolsey gets most snaps at QB during UH football practice

By Stephen Tsai

University of Hawaii quarterback Ikaika Woolsey got the majority of work with the first-team offense during the second practice of spring training Thursday morning on the school's grass practice field.

Woolsey's rotation status did not mean he had solidified a place atop the depth chart. The Rainbow Warriors remain faithful to a schedule of extending the quarterback competition through the summer.

Jeremy Higgins and Taylor Graham took the other snaps. The Warriors have been cautious with Graham, who underwent surgery on his left (non-throwing) shoulder in January.

Quarterback Beau Reilly, who watched Thursday's practice from the sideline, is scheduled to join the Warriors in June when his scholarship is activated.

The Warriors also had planned to use running back Joey Iosefa sparingly this spring. Iosefa missed all or parts of eight games last year because of a foot injury. But Iosefa showed his surprising quickness in running pass routes during team drills.

"It's great to have [Iosefa] out there," Woolsey said.

Beau Yap, who played defensive end the previous three seasons, did well in pass coverage in his new role as an outside linebacker. The Warriors switched from a 4-3 to a 3-4 front this spring, a scheme that allows Yap the flexibility of aligning near the line of scrimmage as a rush end or dropping into pass coverage.

Following Tuesday's practice, head coach Norm Chow abruptly canceled media interviews in response to Honolulu Star-Advertiser columnist Dave Reardon's presence. The two put aside their differences in a closed-door meeting on Wednesday morning. After Thursday morning's practice, Chow and Reardon shook hands.

I'm sure they all work hard and everything but unless one of the quarterbacks is vastly improved over last season, I'm afraid this year's team will struggle again. With Chow's offense, although not as pass heavy as previous years, the quarterback needs to be able to throw the ball and make good decisions. I hope Graham doesn't get hurt (again!) so he can realize his potential. I wonder how good that Reilly kid is?

Johnny Manziel has decided not to go pro and instead has received his release from A&M and will be available to play for the University of Hawaii. Upon hearing the news, June Jones has Notified SMU that he will return to the University of Hawaii as Head Coach. June Jones has already named Dave Reardon as his Defensive Coordinator and Media Relations Director. Dave will be in charge of media access to any of the Rainbow Warriors events.
