No. 10 Hawaii upsets No. 2 BYU in volleyball

Sedore has 17 kills as the Rainbow Warriors rally in 5

Brook Sedore put down a match-high 17 kills and No. 10 Hawaii came up with one of its biggest comebacks in recent memory when taking down No. 2 Brigham Young 16-25, 19-25, 26-24, 26-18, 15-12 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation volleyball match at the Stan Sheriff Center Friday night.

Siki Zarkovic added 12 kills and Kolby Kanetake 12 digs for the Rainbow Warriors (14-10, 12-9) who moved into a tie for eighth place with UCLA in the MPSF standings. It was the first victory over the Cougars (18-3, 18-5) since 2010, ending a seven-match losing skid.

Taylor Sander led BYU with 16 kills and Josue Rivera added 12. Kamehameha graduate Jaylen Reyes had six digs at libero.

The match lasted 2 hours and 29 minutes. 

Hawaii overcame a poor serving night (24 service errors)  with 12. 5 blocks, with Taylor Averill in on eight and Sedore six. The Warriors took the lead in the deciding fifth set at 3-2 on a BYU service error and never looked back.

Hawaii expanded its lead to 10-6 and 12-7 before the Cougars closed to 12-10 and 13-11. 

Sedore and Averill teamed to block Sander for match point and, one sideout later, Nick West put down his 10 kill to end it.

The teams meet again at 7 Saturday night. It is the final home match for Hawaii seniors Jace Olsen, Joby Ramos, Johann Timmer, Aniefre Etim-Thomas and West 

The Warriors finish the regular season next week at No. 3 Pepperdine.
